Blackberry Playbook – Flash in the pan ?

Flash, ahhhhh … Ok I get it, the new RIM Playbook does flash but does it settle Dolby infringements too ? err apparently not. So whilst RIM is making the most of rubbing the Playbook in the face of Apple (and their consumers) in it’s recent advertising push, it would also appear to also be one in the eye for Dolby who as a last resort filed a patent lawsuit over the use of Dolby’s efficient digital audio compression technologies.

“Litigation was regrettably our last resort after RIM declined to pay for the use of Dolby’s technology,” said the executive vice president and general counsel of Dolby. “We have a duty to protect our intellectual property.”

So RIM I guess fill your boots while you can and make the most of the sand-kicking exercise that you are so intent on doing, but I think it’s inevitable that the kicker will eventually get kicked !.

Oracle seeks $billion lawsuit

It’s no secret Oracle are out to get what they feel is justified in its lawsuit against Google. It has been claimed Google has infringed Oracle’s Java patents (which Oracle purchased from Sun Microsystems as part of an acquisition back in January 2010) of which parts are used in it’s Android smartphone operating system. Figures in excess of $6 billion have been banded about, however Google has hit back stating it “a breathtaking figure that is out of proportion to any meaningful measure of the intellectual property at issue.”

So what is next in line for Android ?, this is not the only attack on the giants smartphone OS. Just recently Android developers were targeted by Lodsys over claimed patent infringements along with Apple over it’s in-app purchase.

UK ‘iTunes in the cloud’ on hold till 2012 ?

Well it would appear folks in the UK wont be able to get their hands on the iTunes in the cloud feature just yet. Licensing agreements look to keep the services ‘iTunes in the cloud’ and ‘iTunes match’ at bay until Q1 of 2012.

The news comes via The Telegraph which reports that Apple has begun negotiating deals in the UK about ensuring rights to artists and labels but this process was only in the ‘very early stage[s].’

“The licensing team at the PRS have started talks with Apple, but are a long way off from any deals being signed…It is very much the early stages of the negotiations and is similar to the launch of iTunes – which began in the US and took a while to roll out to other countries,” they said.

A music executive at one of the major record labels, who wished to remain unnamed, said: “Tentative talks have begun between the major labels and Apple in the UK. However, all talks are at the really early stages and no one expects to see the cloud music service live on this side of the pond until 2012.”

Wish you were here ?

WWDC2011_LogoNope not a Pink Floyd reference, unless you have been living under a rock, today is the launch of the annual WWDC event. IOS 5 is certainly an interest point for me, however Mac OSX Lion is expected to be a focal point along with iCloud.

Starting at 10am pacific time (6pm BST) Steve Jobs will be delivering his much awaited keynote speech.

It has been rumoured that no new iPone will be announced this year, but it could still come as the “One last thing..” who knows. I am hoping someone will be providing a live stream as per previous years, but if all else fails Twitter I am sure will keep us abreast of the announcements.

@macrumourslive is certainly on my follow list.
